Even though the kids are back at school, there’s still a feast of fun to be had in the Broads National Park. Choose from our top tips for ways to enjoy the Broads in September, whether you are with or without children.
Our Marshman will be at the mill on open days demonstrating how it works and telling you all about the history of this 199-year-old working windpump. Disabled access is not possible in the mill and the staithe is very uneven.

This is the biggest classic yacht race on the Broads. More than 40 Broads yachts will race the length of the River Yare from Surlingham to Breydon Water and back, with most skippers likely to start mid-morning and finish late afternoon.

Boat trip from Fairhaven Garden to St Benet's Abbey with a 45 minute guided tour of the abbey. (Please note this trip is not suitable for wheelchair users due to the uneven ground at the abbey.)

Discover Breydon Water in all its summer glory – an unforgettable experience. Enjoy looking at summer birds on this internationally important estuary and look out for the UK's largest congregation of avocets, black-tailed godwits and a good variety of other wading birds.

Join Salhouse Broad's Ranger on the boat to learn about Salhouse Broad and the River Bure. We'll then drop you in the capable hands of the Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail's Warden, who'll show you round the boardwalk pointing out interesting species local to the area.

Meet the ferry at the Salhouse Broad moorings for a short boat trip across the broad and upriver to Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail, a tranquil place only accessible by boat. You will explore the trail as darkness falls with the Warden and bat expert, using bat detectors to find, track and identify the bats.

An opportunity to be shown around this 120 year old ‘black-sailed trader’; one of the only two remaining ‘lorries of the Broads’. Experienced volunteer guides share some of the history and stories of the wherries. Accessibility limited to those with reasonable mobility.

Suzie Hanna will talk about the life and work of her father Ted Ellis - renowned naturalist, writer and broadcaster - and his love of the Norfolk countryside including the Broads. This will be followed by a guided walk around Wheatfen Broad and Nature Reserve, highlighting the preservation and conservation work of the Ted Ellis Trust. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Here, take a stroll around the boardwalk with the Warden, watching and listening out for the seasonal flora and fauna, and learning about the conservation of the Broads and the innovative Hoveton Great Broad Restoration Project.

Join us for an amazing canoe paddle down the River Yare to explore the jungle-like swamp backwaters of Surlingham Broad. Open Canadian canoes are safe, stable and seat up to three adults. No experience necessary, but you must be able to swim 50m. Equipment and instruction provided. We are intending to stop on land at lunchtime for a break (five-minute walk to toilets). Finish time is approximate.
